Scalp micropigmentation

Scalp micropigmentation (SMP) is a treatment that creates the illusion of density on the scalp using special pigments. Unlike a tattoo, this cosmetic procedure involves depositing tiny dots of pigment on the scalp to mimic the appearance of hair follicles. Suitable for men and women with hair loss, female pattern hair loss or scarring from hair transplant surgery. It’s an alternative to hair transplants. For those experiencing hair thinning or baldness, scalp micropigmentation Sydney offers a cutting-edge solution to restore confidence and achieve a natural-looking hairline.

All about Scalp micropigmentation
Scalp micropigmentation (SMP) is a non-surgical cosmetic hair tattoo technique that replicates the look of real hair follicles on the scalp. Unlike tattoo ink, SMP uses special pigments that blend with the actual skin tone to give a natural finish. This scalp micropigmentation is for those with advanced hair loss, female hair loss, autoimmune conditions or those who want to camouflage scarring from hair transplant surgery. During SMP, a trained provider uses a micro-needle to deposit micropigmentation pigments into the human skin to create a natural hairline or a fuller head of hair. 2-4 sessions depending on the level of hair loss and desired outcome.
  1. Instant Hair Follicles: Get the look of real hair without surgery.
  2. Affordable: Cheaper than hair transplant surgery.
  3. Permanent: Lasts years before touch-ups are needed.
  4. Scar Camouflage: Hides scarring from hair restoration surgery or injury.
  5. No Downtime: Non invasive so no long recovery time.
  6. Customised: Pigments matched to your natural hair colour and skin tone.
  7. No Donor Hair: Unlike hair transplants, no need for donor hair or grafts.
  8. Boosts Confidence: Restoring a youthful hairline and fuller hair will improve self-esteem.
  9. Works for all levels of hair loss: Thicker hair is for those with shedding hair and for those with advanced hair loss.

Smp treatment is for:

  • Men with Male Pattern Baldness: Create the look of a fuller head of hair or a shaved head.
  • Women with Thinning Hair: Women with female hair loss or shedding of hair.
  • People with Scarring: Scars from hair transplants or head injuries.
  • Clients with Alopecia: Autoimmune conditions like alopecia.
  • People with Active Scalp Conditions: Infections, eczema or psoriasis on the scalp may delay the process.
  • Pregnant or Breastfeeding Women: Hormonal changes may affect pigment retention.
  • People Allergic to Pigments: A patch test is recommended to rule out pigment allergies.
  • Uncontrolled Autoimmune Conditions: Lupus etc.
  • Unrealistic Expectations: SMP is not real hair.
  • Consultation: We assess the scalp, hair density and goals.
  • Patch Test: A small patch test may be done to test for pigment allergies.
  • Design Consultation: Shape, hairline and style are discussed to achieve the most natural look.
  • Pre-Treatment Advice: Avoid sun exposure, certain skincare products and hair treatments before the procedure.
  • Pigment Selection: We choose the pigment colour to match your natural hair.

1st Session The 1st session is all about creating the hairline and a base layer of pigment. We apply light, subtle dots across the scalp to create an underlayer. This is the foundation for future sessions. At this point, it will look very subtle, and you may not feel like much has changed.
2nd and 3rd Sessions The 2nd and 3rd sessions add density and fill in gaps. We add new layers of pigment between the original dots to create the look of fuller, denser hair. If needed, we adjust the hairline shape or pigment colour. By this point, the hair follicles look more realistic. We also address any fading that occurred from the 1st session.
Final Touch-Up: The final touch-up session refines the look and fills in any sparse areas. This session ensures the illusion of hair density is complete and looks natural. We will make any necessary adjustments to the pigment colour, hairline design or density. After the final touch-up, you won’t need to come back for 1-3 years unless touch-ups are required.

Aftercare is key to long-lasting results and minimising the risk of complications like infection, fading or patchy results. Here’s what to do after your SMP treatment:

  1. Keep Your Head Dry
For 3 to 5 days after the procedure, don’t wash your scalp or get it wet. Water can interfere with the healing process and cause pigment migration: no showers, no swimming, no rain during this period.
  2. Avoid Sun Exposure
Sunlight, especially UV rays, can cause the pigment to fade faster than normal. After 3-5 days wear a hat or apply a high-SPF sunscreen on the scalp. Prolonged sun exposure is one of the main causes of fading, so this is important for long-term results.
  3. No Heavy Exercise
Exercise that causes excessive sweating should be avoided for about 7 days after the treatment. Sweat, like water, can cause pigment to fade or migrate. Sweat also contains salts that can irritate the healing skin and cause dryness, peeling or scabbing.
  4. Moisturise the Scalp
Once the scalp has healed, daily moisturising is recommended to prevent dry, flaky skin. Dry skin on the scalp can cause the pigment to look patchy or uneven. A non-greasy, fragrance-free moisturiser is best. Keeping the scalp hydrated also helps to keep the pigment looking vibrant and long-lasting.
  5. Don’t Pick or Scratch
As the scalp heals, you may feel a bit itchy or see tiny scabs forming. Don’t scratch or pick at the scabs. Scratching can cause pigment loss or unevenness. Let the scabs fall off naturally so the pigment can settle properly.
Redness and Itching: Temporary. Fading of Pigment: Pigment will fade if exposed to sun or harsh skincare products. Infection: If aftercare is not followed, there’s a small risk of infection. Scarring: Improper technique from inexperienced practitioners can cause scarring.
Pain tolerance, skin sensitivity and the area being treated all come into play. Areas close to the bone, like the hairline, are more sensitive than the crown or sides of the head. Technicians will often apply numbing creams before the procedure to reduce discomfort. These creams desensitise the skin so it’s more comfortable for the client. If you’re worried about pain, talk to your SMP specialist beforehand. They’ll walk you through the process and put your mind at ease.
Hair loss in women can be tough emotionally as it affects self-esteem and confidence. Unlike men, who lose hair in specific patterns, women lose hair all over, making their scalp more visible. Hair micropigmentation is a non-invasive solution that replicates the appearance of hair follicles and creates the illusion of thicker, fuller hair. This treatment is perfect for women with conditions like female pattern baldness or telogen effluvium, which is a temporary shedding of hair. By applying pigment strategically, SMP makes you look denser and feel more confident in yourself.

Micropigmentation hair is a semi-permanent solution and results last 4-6 years. However, the longevity of the treatment depends on several factors: your skin type, sun exposure and how well you follow aftercare instructions. For example, excessive sun exposure can cause the pigment to fade faster, and oily skin can cause the results to last a bit shorter due to natural sebum production. Touch-up sessions are recommended every 2-4 years to refresh the pigment and maintain the original look.
